إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ﴿98﴾
When We held you (false gods) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists);
إِذْ idh When
نُسَوِّيكُم nusawwīkum we equated you
بِرَبِّ birabbi with (the) Lord
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ l-ʿālamīna (of) the worlds

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

When we considered you equal to the Lord of all the worlds [68].

Which Deities Will Be Thrown Into Hell?

Only those deities will be thrown into Hell that are lifeless, such as trees, stones, and idols made of stone or wood, etc. There are two reasons for throwing them in. One is to increase the regret and remorse of the polytheists, and the other is that they will further fuel the fire of Hell. And among living beings, only those elders and saints will be thrown into Hell who had made promises of intercession to their followers or had the desire that the attributes specific to Allah Almighty be acknowledged in them as well. Or if someone says such a thing, instead of finding it unpleasant, they feel pleased. As for angels, prophets, or monotheistic elders who are not even aware that they were being worshipped, such deities will never be admitted into Hell.

The Dialogue Between the Worshipper and the Worshipped:

After being thrown into Hell, the polytheists will quarrel with their deities and address them, saying that in the world we considered you our fulfiller of needs and remover of difficulties. With this belief, we kept calling upon you, offering vows and sacrifices to you, bowing before you, submitting to you, and did everything that was only worthy of Allah, Lord of the worlds. So this was our grave mistake, our misguidance, and in this misguidance, the companions of Iblis had involved us. And today, when the reality has become clear, it is evident that you are just as helpless as we are. You yourselves are caught in punishment. So what hope can there be of intercession from you, and it was you whom we considered our intercessors. The pain is that today we do not even see any such friend who could at least feel our pain and suffering. Let alone sharing our pain or interceding, at least someone could say a few words to comfort us.
