ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ ﴿209﴾

209. To warn them, and We are not unjust [122].
[122] And Our oppression or excess could only be considered if We were to suddenly send down punishment upon a people without warning them, whereas the real situation is that We sent prophets to every single town who warned the people of their evil end, and yet the people continued to deny them. They kept troubling the prophets by repeatedly saying, “Why do you not bring upon us the punishment with which you threaten us as soon as possible?” By this, their intention was to imply that the promise of punishment was nothing but a lie and deception. Despite these things, We continued to give them opportunities to reform. And after completing the argument in every possible way and after advising them, We sent punishment upon them, and it was sent because they had become fully deserving of it in every respect. There was no excess on Our part in this.
