And (remember) when your Lord called Mûsâ (Moses) (saying): "Go to the people who are Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) -

And (remember) when your Lord called out to Moses: "Go to the wrongdoing people,
[8] Comparison of the Backgrounds of Your Mission and That of Musa (Moses) ؑ:
After drawing attention to the signs in creation (ayat takwiniyyah), the verses of revelation (ayat tanziliyyah) now begin. In this context, seven nations are mentioned in this surah, who, instead of accepting the call of their messenger, chose the path of rebellion, so the divine punishment descended upon them and their traces were wiped from the face of the earth. These verses begin with the mention of Musa (Moses) ؑ. The probable reason for this is that the circumstances Musa ؑ faced at the beginning of his prophethood were even more severe than those faced by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. For example, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a member of a family that, due to its custodianship of the Ka'bah, was considered honorable and respected throughout Arabia, whereas Musa ؑ was a member of a nation enslaved by Pharaoh. Secondly, Musa ؑ was sent to Pharaoh, in whose house he had been raised. Then, unintentionally, he had killed a man from Pharaoh’s people, and out of fear of punishment from the Pharaoh’s government for this killing, he was forced to leave his homeland. Thus, he was both indebted to Pharaoh and a fugitive criminal in his eyes. Thirdly, Pharaoh was the ruler of a grand empire, a tyrant and oppressor, and a claimant to divinity, whereas the people to whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent were either his equals or, in terms of social status, of a lower rank. Thus, by beginning with the circumstances of Musa ؑ, in reality, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is being comforted that some previous prophets had to fulfill the duty of calling to Allah in even more severe circumstances than yours. Therefore, you should not remain so saddened and grieved by the hostile attitude of the disbelievers of Makkah.
