Surah Taa-Haa (20) — Ayah 87

قَالُوا۟ مَآ أَخْلَفْنَا مَوْعِدَكَ بِمَلْكِنَا وَلَـٰكِنَّا حُمِّلْنَآ أَوْزَارًا مِّن زِينَةِ ٱلْقَوْمِ فَقَذَفْنَـٰهَا فَكَذَٰلِكَ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ ﴿87﴾
They said: "We broke not the promise to you, of our own will, but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the [Fir‘aun’s (Pharaoh)] people, then we cast them (into the fire), and that was what As-Sâmirî suggested."
قَالُوا۟ qālū They said
مَآ Not
أَخْلَفْنَا akhlafnā we broke
مَوْعِدَكَ mawʿidaka promise to you
بِمَلْكِنَا bimalkinā by our will
وَلَـٰكِنَّا walākinnā but we
حُمِّلْنَآ ḥummil'nā [we] were made to carry
أَوْزَارًۭا awzāran burdens
مِّن min from
زِينَةِ zīnati ornaments
ٱلْقَوْمِ l-qawmi (of) the people
فَقَذَفْنَـٰهَا faqadhafnāhā so we threw them
فَكَذَٰلِكَ fakadhālika and thus
أَلْقَى alqā threw
ٱلسَّامِرِىُّ l-sāmiriyu the Samiri
