56. (Thus) We showed Pharaoh all Our signs [38], but he denied them and refused to believe.
[38] After the first meeting of Musa (peace be upon him) with Pharaoh, several intermediate stages have been omitted here. During this period, Musa (peace be upon him) showed Pharaoh many signs as proof of his prophethood. These have been mentioned at various places in the Quran. Whenever a calamity would descend upon the land, Pharaoh would say to Musa (peace be upon him), "Pray to your Lord. If this calamity is removed, we will believe in you." Then, when the calamity would be removed through the prayer of Musa (peace be upon him), he would break his promise and become arrogant again. This happened repeatedly. In reality, Pharaoh had become convinced of the prophethood of Musa (peace be upon him), but he was not willing to relinquish his power at any cost. Therefore, he would deny every time.
