Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 73

The Cow · Medinan · Juz 1 · Page 11

So We said: "Strike him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)." Thus Allâh brings the dead to life and shows you His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) so that you may understand.
فَقُلْنَا faqul'nā So We said
ٱضْرِبُوهُ iḍ'ribūhu Strike him
بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ bibaʿḍihā with a part of it
كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Like this

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

So We said, "Strike the dead body with a piece of the slaughtered cow." [86] (Thus, the dead man spoke and revealed his killer.) In this way, Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His signs [87] so that you may understand.

[86]
The Dead Body Coming to Life and Identifying the Killer:

The crime of the murderers was not only that, out of greed for wealth and property, they killed their uncle. Rather, their second crime was that they threw the corpse at the door of another person so that suspicion would not fall upon them, and thirdly, in order to save themselves from suspicion, they were putting the blame of this murder on others. After the cow was slaughtered, a piece of its meat was taken and struck upon the corpse of the murdered man, and blood began to flow from his wound. Signs of life appeared in the body, and this corpse spoke and told the name and address of the killer or killers. After that, death overtook him again. In this way, the crimes that this nation wanted to conceal, Allah Almighty made them manifest. Thus, in retribution, both nephews were killed and they did not receive anything from their uncle’s inheritance.

[87] From this incident, several matters became clear, for example:
1. This cow was exactly of the same kind that was worshipped as a deity; when it could not even save itself at the time of slaughter, how could it harm or benefit others? Moreover, those who slaughtered it suffered no harm before or after the slaughter.
2. That which these people wanted to conceal, Allah Almighty made manifest in this manner.
3. They became certain that if Allah Almighty can bring this corpse to life after so many days, then He can also bring us back to life and hold us accountable.
