63. And (O Children of Israel! Remember) when We raised the Mount (Tur) above you [81] and took a firm covenant from you, (saying:) "Hold firmly to what We have given you and remember well what is in it, so that you may become righteous."
[81] The Nature of the Covenant of Bani Israel:
This incident also relates to that era of Bani Israel when seventy of their chosen individuals were struck by lightning and killed, and then brought back to life. They, along with other people of Bani Israel, were made to stand at the foot of Mount Tur, and the mountain was raised above them like a canopy. Behind them was the sea, and above their heads, Mount Tur like a canopy. At that moment, they were asked, "Will you act upon the Torah or not? And if you agree, then make a firm covenant and pledge, otherwise this mountain will be dropped upon you and you will be crushed." At that time, Bani Israel realized their disobedience, mistakes, and breaches of covenant, repented from their sins, and made a firm commitment to act upon the Torah. And this was done so that some quality of piety might develop among you people.
