Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Kind words and forgiving of faults are better than Sadaqah (charity) followed by injury. And Allâh is Rich (Free of all needs) and He is Most-Forbearing.

263. Kind words and forgiveness [379] are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Free of need and Forbearing.
[379] Charity is Obligatory for Every Person:
He said: It is obligatory for every Muslim to give charity. The Companions ؓ asked: "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what if someone does not have wealth?" He said: "He should work with his hands, benefit himself, and also give charity." The Companions ؓ asked: What if he is unable to do even this? He said: "He should act upon good and refrain from evil. That too is charity for him."
Hadiths Regarding Charity:
2. He also said: Protect yourselves from the Fire, even if it is by giving a piece of a date in charity. 3. A man asked you ﷺ: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Which charity is greatest in reward? He said: That which is given in Ramadan. Hazrat Abu Hurairah ؓ says that I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Which charity is best?" He said: "The one given by a poor person from his own earnings, and begin with those who are under your care."
The Best Charity:
5. Once, another man asked you the same question: Which charity is best? You replied: "The charity you give while you are healthy, being greedy for wealth, fearing poverty, and hoping for riches. Therefore, hasten to give charity. Do not delay until your soul reaches your throat and you begin to say: Give this much to so-and-so, and this much to so-and-so, while at that time the wealth no longer belongs to you but to your heirs."
