Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 254

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَنفِقُوا۟ مِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِىَ يَوْمٌ لَّا بَيْعٌ فِيهِ وَلَا خُلَّةٌ وَلَا شَفَـٰعَةٌ ۗ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ﴿254﴾
O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers).
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O you
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna who
ءَامَنُوٓا۟ āmanū believe[d]
أَنفِقُوا۟ anfiqū Spend
مِمَّا mimmā of what
رَزَقْنَـٰكُم razaqnākum We (have) provided you
مِّن min from
قَبْلِ qabli before
أَن an that
يَأْتِىَ yatiya comes
يَوْمٌۭ yawmun a Day
لَّا no
بَيْعٌۭ bayʿun bargaining
فِيهِ fīhi in it
وَلَا walā and no
خُلَّةٌۭ khullatun friendship
وَلَا walā and no
شَفَـٰعَةٌۭ ۗ shafāʿatun intercession
وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ wal-kāfirūna And the deniers
هُمُ humu they
ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ l-ẓālimūna (are) the wrongdoers

254. O you who believe! Spend from what We have provided for you before a Day comes when there will be no trading, no friendship, and no intercession. And the wrongdoers are those who deny these [360] truths.

[259] Here, the virtue of spending in the way of Allah is mentioned. Love for wealth is inherent in human nature, and if it is not spent, it becomes a trial and a cause of destruction for a person. Furthermore, O Muslims! The religion you have believed in requires wealth for its establishment and for paving its paths, as well as for helping the weak and needy individuals in society. Such acts of charity will also become a means of salvation for a person in the Hereafter, therefore special attention has been drawn to this. Once, a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Which charity is the greatest in terms of reward?" He ﷺ replied: "That which you give while you are healthy, desirous (of wealth), fearing poverty, and hoping for riches. So hasten to give charity, lest the soul reaches the throat and you begin to say, 'Give this much to so-and-so and that much to so-and-so,' while at that time, the wealth no longer belongs to you but to your heirs." [مسلم، كتاب الزكوٰة، باب ان افضل الصدقه صدقه الصحيح الشحيح] That is, on the Day of Resurrection, only your acts of charity will benefit you. Your business dealings and friendships will not avail you, nor will anyone's intercession be of use there.

[360] One meaning of this phrase could also be that those who do not give charity (especially zakat) are disbelievers, and they are the wrongdoers who do not spend in the way of Allah from the blessings granted by Allah. And another meaning is the one mentioned in the translation: that those who do not believe in Allah's law of reward and punishment and His system on the Day of Resurrection are both disbelievers and wrongdoers.
