سُوْرَةُ البَقَرَةِ
Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 240
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنكُمْ وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَٰجًا وَصِيَّةً لِّأَزْوَٰجِهِم مَّتَـٰعًا إِلَى ٱلْحَوْلِ غَيْرَ إِخْرَاجٍ ۚ فَإِنْ خَرَجْنَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى مَا فَعَلْنَ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِنَّ مِن مَّعْرُوفٍ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴿240﴾
Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
And those of you who die and leave behind wives should bequeath for their wives a year’s maintenance and residence without turning them out, but if they (wives) leave, there is no sin on you for that which they do of themselves, provided it is honourable (e.g. lawful marriage). And Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

240. Those among you who die and leave behind wives should make a bequest for their wives (widows) that they be provided for a year and not be turned out of their homes [337]. But if they themselves leave and choose something good for themselves, there is no blame on you. And Allah is Mighty and Wise.

Abrogated Rulings Regarding the Maintenance of Widows:
This command was revealed in the early days of Islam that, at the time of death, a man should make a bequest to his heirs regarding his wives. Later, when the waiting period (‘iddah) for a widow was fixed at four months and ten days, and according to the verse of inheritance, the widow’s share in the husband’s estate was determined, the ruling of this verse was abrogated. Now, the ruling for the widow is that she should spend the days of ‘iddah at her deceased husband’s home. She is free afterwards, and during this period, her maintenance is the responsibility of the heirs and should come from the estate, and the issue of a year’s maintenance is resolved by her share in the inheritance.
