183. O you who believe! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa (God-consciousness) [229].

The Obligation and Wisdom of Fasting:

The command of fasting has been present in the Shari'ah of all prophets from Prophet Adamؑ onwards. There has only been a difference in the specification of days, and it is an important pillar of the religion of Islam. Its importance lies in the fact that it reforms the rebellious self and makes it easier to fulfill those commands of Shari'ah which seem burdensome. Fasting is not just an exercise in abstaining from food and drink, but there is also an emphasis on avoiding quarrels and evil speech. Thus, the Messenger of Allahﷺ said: Fasting is a shield (against evil). Therefore, whoever is fasting should neither speak indecently nor raise his voice, and in another narration, it is said that he should not act ignorantly, and if someone abuses him or fights with him, he should say, "I am fasting." [بخاري، كتاب الصوم، باب فضل الصوم] The Prophetﷺ also said: Whoever does not give up false speech and evil deeds while fasting, Allah has no need for him to give up his food and drink. [بخاري، كتاب الصوم باب من لم يدع قول الزور والعمل به فى الصوم] And these very things create taqwa (God-consciousness) in a person.
