Verily, those who conceal what Allâh has sent down of the Book, and purchase a small gain therewith (of worldly things), they eat into their bellies nothing but fire. Allâh will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

174. Indeed, those who conceal what Allah has sent down of the Book [217] and exchange it for a small worldly gain—they are only filling their bellies with fire. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will neither speak [218] to them nor purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.

Concealing the Truth and Consuming Forbidden Wealth Through False Fatwas:

The subject of verse 159 has been repeated, and it has been explained that one aspect of concealing the truth is that these leader-type people obtain some worldly benefit and wealth in exchange for it. They give false fatwas based on the interpretation of verses or on the basis of different statements of jurists. In this way, on one hand, they mislead people, and on the other hand, they take money from them. And interestingly, the more incorrect the fatwa is, the higher the fees they charge. This wealth is undoubtedly forbidden, which, in addition to the apparent fire of Hell, will also ignite a fire within them.

[218]
Allah Not Speaking is Proof of Committing a Major Sin:

Here, not speaking refers to Allah’s extreme displeasure and anger. The jurists say that regarding those actions about which it is mentioned that Allah will not speak to them, or will not look at them, or will not purify them, all such actions are major sins. And there will be a large number of Muslims whom Allah will admit into Hell until they are purified from their sins. But there are some sins that will not be purified by the fire of Hell, such as shirk or those about whom the words of eternal stay in the Fire have been mentioned. As for the point that Allah will speak to everyone at the time of reckoning, the answer is that Allah’s reckoning with such people will also be in the form of threat, rebuke, and scolding, or their reckoning will be taken through the angels. «والله اعلم بالصواب»
