And those who followed will say: "If only we had one more chance to return (to the worldly life), we would disown (declare ourselves as innocent from) them as they have disowned (declared themselves as innocent from) us." Thus Allâh will show them their deeds as regrets for them. And they will never get out of the Fire.

فَنَتَبَرَّأَfanatabarra-athen we will disown

تَبَرَّءُوا۟tabarraūthey disown

يُرِيهِمُyurīhimuwill show them

167. And those who followed will say, "If only we could have another chance, we would disown them as they have disowned us!" [206] Thus Allah will show them their deeds as regrets for them [207], and they will never be able to escape from the Fire.
[206] The Disavowal of Spiritual Leaders from Their Disciples and Vice Versa:
In these two verses, a scene from the Day of Resurrection is presented, and a dialogue is described between the polytheists and their deities, that is, their spiritual leaders and (disciples) followers, who in this world posed as the removers of difficulties, fulfillers of needs, and guarantors of intercession for their disciples. On the Day of Resurrection, due to the terror and fear of accountability before Allah being so intense, everyone will be concerned only for themselves. Therefore, these leaders will not only refuse to help, assist, or intercede for their disciples, but will even deny that these people were ever their disciples and will say that they have no connection with them, nor do they recognize them. Rather, they will express disavowal and hatred towards them. Seeing this situation, the disciples will become extremely disappointed and will wish that if only they could get another chance to return to the world, they would treat these leaders in the same way as they are being treated today, and they too would become as disassociated and disavowing of these spiritual leaders as these leaders have become of them today.
[207] Why Are the Deeds of the Polytheists a Cause of Regret? One regret will be that the spiritual leaders have expressed disavowal contrary to their promises, and the second is that the good deeds they performed, such as charity, alms, and offerings, will be wasted due to their polytheism, while their evil deeds will remain. In this way, they will become a collection of various regrets. Their spiritual leaders will also be a cause of regret, and their deeds will also be a cause of regret, but none of these regrets will yield any result, and there will be no way to escape the punishment of Hell.
