Surah Al-Baqara (2) — Ayah 144

The Cow · Medinan · Juz 2 · Page 22

Verily! We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad’s صلى الله عليه وسلم) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid-al-Harâm (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction. Certainly, the people who were given the Scripture (i.e. Jews and the Christians) know well that, that (your turning towards the direction of the Ka‘bah at Makkah in prayers) is the truth from their Lord. And Allâh is not unaware of what they do.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

144. We have certainly seen your face turning repeatedly towards the sky. So We will surely turn you to a direction of prayer that you will be pleased with. So turn your face towards al-Masjid al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque). And wherever you are, turn your faces towards it. And those who were given the Book (the Torah) know well that this command regarding the change of Qiblah is from their Lord [179] and is absolutely true. (Yet) Allah is not unaware of what they do.

[179] Because it is mentioned in their books that the Prophet of the Last Age ﷺ will be born in Arabia, will follow the way of Abraham ؑ, and will pray facing the Ka'bah.
