ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لِلَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسُّوٓءَ بِجَهَـٰلَةٍ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿119﴾
Then, verily! Your Lord - for those who do evil (commit sins and are disobedient to Allâh) in ignorance and afterward repent and do righteous deeds, verily, your Lord thereafter, (to such) is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
ثُمَّ thumma Then
إِنَّ inna indeed
رَبَّكَ rabbaka your Lord
لِلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who
عَمِلُوا۟ ʿamilū did
ٱلسُّوٓءَ l-sūa evil
بِجَهَـٰلَةٍۢ bijahālatin in ignorance
ثُمَّ thumma then
تَابُوا۟ tābū repented
مِنۢ min after
بَعْدِ baʿdi after
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that
وَأَصْلَحُوٓا۟ wa-aṣlaḥū and corrected themselves
إِنَّ inna indeed
رَبَّكَ rabbaka your Lord
مِنۢ min after that
بَعْدِهَا baʿdihā after that
لَغَفُورٌۭ laghafūrun (is) surely Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌ raḥīmun Most Merciful

But those who did evil out of ignorance, then repented [122] and reformed themselves afterwards—surely, after that, your Lord is certainly Forgiving and Merciful.

Conditions for the Acceptance of Repentance:

The conditions for the acceptance of repentance have already been mentioned under Surah Al-Baqarah, verse number 160, and Surah Al-An'am, verse number 54. In brief, it is that the sin committed by a person should have been done out of forgetfulness or ignorance. Secondly, when he becomes aware of the sin, he should immediately repent before Allah, then make a firm resolve never to commit that sin again in the future. Then, if in that crime someone’s right has been usurped, he should seek forgiveness from that person or fulfill it in some way. Then there is hope that Allah will forgive his sin. But if the sin is committed knowingly or out of dishonesty, thinking that he will repent later, or if after repenting from the sin he continues to repeat the same sin, or if someone’s right is due upon him and he neither seeks forgiveness from that person nor tries to fulfill it, then in such a case, there is little hope for the acceptance of his repentance.
