And those who disbelieved, said to their Messengers: "Surely, we shall drive you out of our land, or you shall return to our religion." So their Lord revealed to them: "Truly, We shall destroy the Zâlimûn (polytheists, disbelievers and wrong-doers).

The disbelievers finally said to their messenger, "We will surely expel you from our land [17], or you must return to our religion." Then their Lord revealed to them [18], "We will certainly destroy these wrongdoers."
[17] The Disbelievers’ Response: Either Return to Our Religion or We Will Expel You:
When the opponents of the truth become helpless before the arguments of the truth, their last resort is to threaten their Prophet and his followers, saying: either accept what we say and return to our religion, or we will expel you from here. In reality, this action is an admission of their mental defeat, and such a threat has been given to every Prophet. Thus, when the first revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he returned home in a state of anxiety, Lady Khadijah took him to her cousin Waraqah bin Nawfal. When Waraqah bin Nawfal heard about this incident, he said: “This is the same angel who used to descend upon Musa (Moses) ؑ.” Then he added: “If only I could live until the time when his people will expel you from here, and I could help you then.” The Prophet ﷺ asked in surprise: “Will my people expel me from here?” He ﷺ asked this because the entire nation considered him truthful and trustworthy, looked at him with respect and honor, and he ﷺ was beloved to all of them. Waraqah bin Nawfal said: “Yes! Because whenever a Prophet has presented such a message, his people have always expelled him.” [بخاري، باب كيف كان بدء الوحي الي رسول اللهﷺ] Thus, a time came when his people also forced you to leave your homeland.
[18] The Schemes of the Disbelievers Turn Back Upon Themselves:
When the battle between truth and falsehood reaches the stage where the opponents of the truth seek to expel their Prophet from his homeland or even to take his life, from that moment the causes of the opponents’ destruction begin, and the Prophets are informed of this. They are also told that from the very place where they are being threatened with expulsion, after We repel them, they will be settled there and granted authority and control. These verses were revealed during the period when the Quraysh of Makkah were also plotting to expel or kill the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and these verses, in fact, served as a prophecy against them. But in any case, they remained determined in their opposition to their Prophet. Therefore, their attention never turned to this. In the end, the very outcome occurred that is mentioned in this verse: after the conquest of Makkah, authority over that very place came into the hands of the Muslims, from where they had been expelled, and most of the opponents of the truth embraced Islam, and those who did not, left that place on their own.
