Alif-Lâm-Râ. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’ân, and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings]. (This is) a Book which We have revealed unto you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) in order that you might lead mankind out of darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of belief in the Oneness of Allâh and Islâmic Monotheism) by their Lord’s Leave to the Path of the All-Mighty, the Owner of all Praise.

Tafsir Taiseer ul-Quran (Facilitation of the Quran) is a comprehensive Quran commentary by Maulana Abdul Rahman Kilani, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar from Pakistan. Known for his eloquent and accessible writing style, Kilani authored this tafsir with a focus on clarity — making Quranic meanings understandable to the common reader. The tafsir provides detailed historical context for verses related to battles and expeditions, and firmly refutes modernist ideologies using strong scriptural evidence. It is widely regarded as an invaluable resource for understanding the Quran and countering deviant interpretations. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

1. Alif. Lam. Ra. This is a Book which We have revealed to you so that you may bring mankind out of darkness into light, by the permission of their Lord, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy Allah.

Guidance and Allah’s Permission?

In contrast to light or nur, it is not darkness but rather darknesses that is mentioned, because the straight path can only be one, and this straight path is described as light, whereas the crooked or false paths can be countless, and all of these are paths of misguidance, so all these paths are described as darknesses. Thus, by revealing this Book, the Noble Quran, our purpose is that through it you bring people away from all the paths of falsehood to the straight path. And this can only happen when their Lord also wills to bring them to the right path. And the law of this will is that whoever seeks guidance, Allah certainly grants him the ability to be guided, and this is His will or permission, but those who choose the path of stubbornness, Allah does not grant them the ability to be guided.
