Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 96

فَلَمَّآ أَن جَآءَ ٱلْبَشِيرُ أَلْقَىٰهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِۦ فَٱرْتَدَّ بَصِيرًا ۖ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿96﴾
Then, when the bearer of the glad tidings arrived, he cast it (the shirt) over his face, and he became clear-sighted. He said: "Did I not say to you, ‘I know from Allâh that which you know not.’"
فَلَمَّآ falammā Then when

أَلْقَىٰهُ alqāhu he cast it
عَلَىٰ ʿalā over
وَجْهِهِۦ wajhihi his face
فَٱرْتَدَّ fa-ir'tadda then returned (his) sight
بَصِيرًۭا ۖ baṣīran then returned (his) sight
قَالَ qāla He said
أَلَمْ alam Did not
أَقُل aqul I say
لَّكُمْ lakum to you
إِنِّىٓ innī indeed, I
أَعْلَمُ aʿlamu [I] know
مِنَ mina from
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
مَا what
لَا not

96. Then, when the bearer of good news arrived and cast (the shirt) over Ya‘qub’s face, he immediately regained his sight and said, “Did I not tell you that I know from Allah what you do not [92] know?”

The Restoration of Yaqub’sؑ Sight:

The bearer of this good news was his eldest son, Judah. It was Judah who had stopped his brothers from killing Sayyiduna Yusufؑ and had suggested instead that he be thrown into an unknown well. It was also Judah who had said, “How can I go back and face my father?” Therefore, he decided to stay in Egypt. It was Judah who reached his father before the caravan, bringing Sayyiduna Yusuf’sؑ shirt and giving him the glad tidings of Yusufؑ and Binyamin being found. Then, when he placed the shirt on his father’s face, his sight was instantly restored, his eyes became healthy, and he could see everything again. Then he informed his father that his other brothers were also on their way, and that Yusufؑ had called all of them and their entire family to him, and that they had come for this very purpose. At that moment, Sayyiduna Yaqubؑ said to all his household that by now they must have realized that what he used to say was indeed true. He said, “I knew things that you could not know,” and those things were that Yusuf was certainly alive, which is why he had sent his sons to search for him, and that they would surely meet him, and that Allah would unite them all at some point. The source of this knowledge could have been the knowledge of revelation, which is granted only to prophets, and also the dream which only heؑ and Sayyiduna Yusufؑ knew about.
