Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 79

قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ أَن نَّأْخُذَ إِلَّا مَن وَجَدْنَا مَتَـٰعَنَا عِندَهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ ﴿79﴾
He said: "Allâh forbid, that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our property. Indeed (if we did so), we should be Zâlimûn (wrong-doers)."
قَالَ qāla He said
مَعَاذَ maʿādha Allah forbid
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah forbid
أَن an that
نَّأْخُذَ nakhudha we take
إِلَّا illā except
مَن man (one) who
وَجَدْنَا wajadnā we found
مَتَـٰعَنَا matāʿanā our possession
عِندَهُۥٓ ʿindahu with him
إِنَّآ innā Indeed, we
إِذًۭا idhan then
لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ laẓālimūna surely (would be) wrongdoers

Yusuf said, "Allah forbid that we should take anyone except the one with whom we found our (missing) property [76]; otherwise, we would surely be unjust."

[76] When this incident occurred, the brothers of Yusuf immediately thought, "Now how can we face our father, to whom we had made such a firm promise that we would surely bring Binyamin back with us, except if some calamity befell us?" Now, if these ten brothers went to their father and only Binyamin was not with them, what greater proof could there be of their lies and deceit? Especially in the situation that, due to the incident with Sayyiduna Yusuf, their father was already suspicious of them. Now they began to plead before Sayyiduna Yusufؑ, saying, "You have already done us many favors; please do us this one as well: instead of Binyamin, keep any one of us as your slave, because his father is very old and venerable and will not be able to bear the pain of his separation." In response, Sayyiduna Yusufؑ said, "How could we commit such an injustice? We will only keep the one with whom our lost property was found." Even at this point, Sayyiduna Yusufؑ did not call Binyamin a thief, nor did he accuse him of theft, because in reality, he had not stolen.
