Surah Yusuf (12) — Ayah 65

وَلَمَّا فَتَحُوا۟ مَتَـٰعَهُمْ وَجَدُوا۟ بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مَا نَبْغِى ۖ هَـٰذِهِۦ بِضَـٰعَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا ۖ وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ كَيْلٌ يَسِيرٌ ﴿65﴾
And when they opened their bags, they found their money had been returned to them. They said: "O our father! What (more) can we desire? This, our money has been returned to us; so we shall get (more) food for our family, and we shall guard our brother and add one more measure of a camel’s load. This quantity is easy (for the king to give)."
وَلَمَّا walammā And when
فَتَحُوا۟ fataḥū they opened
مَتَـٰعَهُمْ matāʿahum their baggage
وَجَدُوا۟ wajadū they found
بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ biḍāʿatahum their merchandise
رُدَّتْ ruddat returned
إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ ilayhim to them
قَالُوا۟ qālū They said
يَـٰٓأَبَانَا yāabānā O our father
مَا What
نَبْغِى ۖ nabghī (could) we desire
هَـٰذِهِۦ hādhihi This
بِضَـٰعَتُنَا biḍāʿatunā (is) our merchandise
رُدَّتْ ruddat returned
إِلَيْنَا ۖ ilaynā to us
وَنَمِيرُ wanamīru And we will get provision
أَهْلَنَا ahlanā (for) our family
وَنَحْفَظُ wanaḥfaẓu and we will protect
أَخَانَا akhānā our brother
وَنَزْدَادُ wanazdādu and get an increase
كَيْلَ kayla measure
بَعِيرٍۢ ۖ baʿīrin (of) a camel's (load)
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
كَيْلٌۭ kaylun (is) a measurement
يَسِيرٌۭ yasīrun easy

Then when they opened their baggage, they found that their money had been returned to them. (They were overjoyed and) said, "O our father! What more could we desire? Our money has been returned to us [62]. Now we will bring food for our family, protect our brother, and bring an extra camel-load of grain [63]. This time, obtaining the grain will be easy."

[62] Then, when they opened the sacks of grain and began to take out the grain, they also found the money returned to them which they had paid as the price for the grain, and their happiness knew no bounds. The favors of the king of Egypt came to their minds, and a new reason arose for again requesting to take Binyamin along. At the time of the first request, they did not know when the money for the grain would be available and when they would have to go to Egypt again. That is why the demand to take Binyamin along was not so insistent. Perhaps they thought that when the time came, their father would agree or they would persuade him, but now that the money for the grain was also available, they began to make promises and pledges for Binyamin’s protection and started to compel their father to let him go with them, explaining its benefits.

[63] That is, Binyamin’s share will also be obtained, and now that all the facilities are available, then why should we not try to bring more grain? And some people have taken the meaning of ﴿يَسِيْرٌ﴾ in this verse as “little” instead of “easy.” That is, the grain we have brought is little for our household. How long will it last? Therefore, we should not miss the opportunity to bring more grain at any cost.
