Surah Hud (11) — Ayah 35

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ قُلْ إِنِ ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ فَعَلَىَّ إِجْرَامِى وَأَنَا۠ بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُجْرِمُونَ ﴿35﴾
Or they (the pagans of Makkah) say: "He (Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) has fabricated it (the Qur’ân)." Say: "If I have fabricated it, upon me be my crimes, but I am innocent of (all) those crimes which you commit."

تُجْرِمُونَ tuj'rimūna crimes you commit

35. (O Prophet!) Do the disbelievers say: "He has fabricated this (Quran) himself"? [42] Say: "If I have fabricated it, then my sin is upon me, and I am free from the crimes you commit."

The Similarity Between the Disbelievers of Makkah and the People of Nuh:

In the previous verses, the circumstances of Nuh (peace be upon him) that have been described, and the responses and arguments his people used to present to him, were exactly the same as those faced by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Quraysh of Makkah. Therefore, the Quraysh of Makkah developed the suspicion that these are our own circumstances and questions and answers being presented to us under the name of Nuh (peace be upon him). Thus, they also accused the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he himself is fabricating these things and presenting them before us, and in accordance with the saying "words come in the stories of others," this is actually a criticism directed at us. What should have happened was that the Quraysh of Makkah took a lesson from the incidents of Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him), but instead, their minds turned towards a negative aspect, and instead of reforming themselves, they leveled yet another accusation against you ﷺ. In response, Allah Almighty said that you should say to them: If, as you claim, I have fabricated this incident, then I alone am responsible for this crime. But what about the crimes you are committing? You will have to bear their consequences, not me.
