1. Woe to every backbiter and slanderer [1],

The Literal Meaning of ﴿هَمَزَ﴾:
﴿هُمَزَةٌ﴾ and ﴿هَمَزَ﴾ mean to mock, criticize, or reproach someone for an action, deed, or word, whether or not that action deserves criticism. This mockery or reproach may be done verbally or merely through gestures of the eyes. ﴿لَمَزَ﴾ means to keep searching for someone's faults and to be on the lookout for any weakness that may be found. It means to find faults or to criticize, and then to backbite about such matters to others. In this verse, in fact, those noblemen of Quraysh are being warned who were always mocking the Muslims and the Prophet of Islam, winking at each other, mocking and taunting the mistakes they perceived, and constantly seeking out faults they did not know. They are being told that the consequence of such actions will be their own destruction and ruin.
