Surah Ad-Dhuhaa (93) — Ayah 1
وَٱلضُّحَىٰ ﴿1﴾

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. (Ayah 1 to 3) ➊ {وَ الضُّحٰى (1) وَ الَّيْلِ اِذَا سَجٰى …:’’ الضُّحٰى ‘‘} When the sun rises and becomes fully bright. {’’ سَجٰى ‘‘ ’’سَجَا يَسْجُوْ سَجْوًا‘‘} (N) To be at peace. {’’ وَدَّعَكَ ‘‘ ’’وَدَعَ يَدَعُ‘‘} (To leave) is from the Baab al-Taf'eel, which implies emphasis in leaving. {’’ قَلٰى ‘‘ ’’ قَلٰي يَقْلِيْ قِلًي وَ قَلاَءً ‘‘} (D, S) {’’ اَلرَّجُلَ أَبْغَضَهٗ ‘‘} To bear malice against someone.
➋ Jundub bin Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became ill, so for two or three nights he did not get up (for Tahajjud). A woman came and said: "O Muhammad! I hope that your devil has left you, for I have not seen him come to you for two or three nights." Upon this, Allah Almighty revealed this Surah. [ بخاري، التفسیر، باب قولہ : «ما ودعک ربک وما قلٰی» : ۴۹۵۰ ] In another narration from Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), it is reported that once Jibreel (peace be upon him) delayed in coming, until the polytheists began to say that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has been abandoned by his Lord, so Allah Almighty revealed this Surah. [ طبری : ۲۴ /۴۸۷، ح : ۳۷۸۵۷ ] The connection between the oath and its response is that when the sun is fully bright at noon, after that the dark night prevails, yet no one thinks that this is due to Allah's displeasure. So, if after the light of revelation there is a brief pause, why is it assumed that Allah has abandoned you? This is absolutely not the case! Rather, the reality is that just as after the light and heat of the sun all day, the human body needs the peace and comfort of night, in the same way, after the heavy burden of revelation, the nature needs rest and a pause to bear further revelation.
