The literal meaning of { اَلَمْنَجْعَلْلَّهٗعَيْنَيْنِ … : ’’ نَجْدٌ ‘‘} is "a high place." By the two high places in {’’ النَّجْدَيْنِ ‘‘}, it refers to the mother's breasts. As soon as a child is born, according to the guidance granted by Allah Almighty, he rushes towards the mother's breasts, puts them in his mouth, and suckles milk, on which his life depends. If Allah Almighty does not give him this guidance, no child can survive. The relevance of the words eyes, tongue, and lips with the mother's breasts is clear. Most commentators have taken {’’ النَّجْدَيْنِ ‘‘} to mean the two clear paths of good and evil. The meaning is that how did he assume, while rebelling against Allah and spending wealth extravagantly, that no one has seen him and no one will question him? Whereas the very eyes with which he sees, We have made them; the tongue and lips with which he boasts, We have also created them; then We have also granted him the awareness of the path of good and evil. So how is it possible that the One who granted him eyes is Himself not seeing, the One who gave him tongue and lips cannot question him, and the One who granted him the awareness of good and evil will not question him about the use of this awareness?
