And never (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave. Certainly they disbelieved in Allâh and His Messenger, and died while they were Fâsiqûn (rebellious, - disobedient to Allâh and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم).
وَلَا walā And not

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah84) {وَ لَا تُصَلِّ عَلٰۤى اَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْ مَّاتَ اَبَدًا … :} It is narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Abdullah bin Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked, "Give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and pray his funeral prayer, and supplicate for his forgiveness." The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him his shirt and said, "Inform me so that I may pray his funeral prayer." He informed him, and when the Prophet (peace be upon him) intended to pray his funeral prayer, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) pulled him and said, "Has not Allah forbidden you from praying the funeral prayer for the hypocrites?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "I have been given two choices: «اِسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ اَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ » [ التوبۃ : ۸۰ ] (Seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them)." So the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed his funeral prayer, then this verse was revealed: «وَ لَا تُصَلِّ عَلٰۤى اَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْ مَّاتَ اَبَدًا » [ بخاری، الجنائز، باب ما یکرہ من الصلوۃ علی المنافقین… : ۱۳۶۶۔ مسلم : ۲۴۰۰ ] Now, whoever, after reciting the kalimah, openly commits shirk and seeks such help from other than Allah which is not in anyone's power except Allah, or after the kalimah, the first sign of being a Muslim—prayer—is not found in him, or he clearly calls the limits of Allah savage punishments, or mocks the commands of Allah, or in this era declares them impractical, how can it be correct to pray his funeral prayer? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to stand by the grave after burying the deceased and supplicate for him, and at various other times would go there and pray for them; regarding the hypocrites, Allah forbade even this for him. Because in this is the honoring and respect of the hypocrite, disbeliever, and polytheist, which Allah does not approve of in any way.
