Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 75 to 77) ➊ {وَ مِنْهُمْ مَّنْ عٰهَدَ اللّٰهَ … : } Previously, these people used to suffer from hunger and their city, Madinah, which was called Yathrib in those days, also had no status. But after the arrival of the Prophet (peace be upon him), their city became the center of all of Arabia, their trade expanded, and due to the wars, they also obtained much spoils of war, which made them wealthy. The verse alludes to this, that these hypocrites are so ungrateful that Allah and His Messenger, through whom they attained this prosperity, are the very ones they turn against, revealing the corruption in their hearts. They had made a covenant with Allah that if He granted them His bounty, they would surely give charity and become righteous, but when Allah bestowed His bounty and enriched them, instead of spending the wealth given by Allah for the elevation of Islam, they became miserly and turned away from Allah and His Messenger. As a result, Allah placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day of Resurrection.

➋ Some commentators have considered the reason for the revelation of these verses to be Tha‘labah bin Hatib, who asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to pray for wealth for him and promised to give charity. When his wealth increased greatly, after abandoning congregational prayer, he also left Friday prayer, and when the collector of zakah came to him, he said, "This is just like jizyah." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Woe to Tha‘labah!" Hearing this, he brought the zakah, but the Prophet refused to accept it. After him, Abu Bakr, then ‘Umar, then ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) also refused to accept it, and in this state, he died during the caliphate of ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). However, the scholars have strongly rejected this narration and clarified that it has no authentic chain. Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) said, this story is false, because Tha‘labah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a participant in Badr.
