لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَـًٔا أَوْ مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ أَوْ مُدَّخَلًا لَّوَلَّوْا۟ إِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَ ﴿57﴾
Should they find a refuge, or caves, or a place of concealment, they would turn straightway thereto with a swift rush.
لَوْ law If
يَجِدُونَ yajidūna they could find
مَلْجَـًٔا malja-an a refuge
أَوْ aw or
مَغَـٰرَٰتٍ maghārātin caves
أَوْ aw or
مُدَّخَلًۭا muddakhalan a place to enter
لَّوَلَّوْا۟ lawallaw surely, they would turn
إِلَيْهِ ilayhi to it
وَهُمْ wahum and they
يَجْمَحُونَ yajmaḥūna run wild

(Ayah57) {لَوْ يَجِدُوْنَ مَلْجَاً …:’’ مَلْجَاً ‘‘ ’’لَجَِأَ يَلْجَأُ} (F, S) is a noun of place (ism zarf), a place of refuge. {’’ مَغٰرٰتٍ ‘‘ ’’مَغَارَةٌ‘‘} is the plural. {’’غَوْرٌ‘‘} refers to a deep place, a cave in a mountain or the earth. {’’ مُدَّخَلًا ‘‘ ’’دَخَلَ‘‘ } is a noun of place (zarf) from the form ifti‘āl, and with the addition of letters, the meaning is intensified, i.e., a place to enter with difficulty and hardship. The meaning is that they see no way to escape, otherwise, if they could find even the worst place to go, they would break their bonds and run towards it, because the worst places to go can only be these three. {’’ يَجْمَحُوْنَ ‘‘ ’’جَمَحَ الْفَرَسُ‘‘} originally means a horse breaking loose and running out of the rider’s control, i.e., they have intense hatred for the Muslims, their gatherings, and their society, but they are powerless, so to live in the Muslim society and benefit from it, they swear oaths before you that they are with you.
