Surah At-Tawba (9) — Ayah 51

قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿51﴾
Say: "Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allâh has ordained for us. He is our Maulâ (Lord, Helper and Protector)." And in Allâh let the believers put their trust.
قُل qul Say
لَّن lan Never
يُصِيبَنَآ yuṣībanā will befall us
إِلَّا illā except
مَا what
كَتَبَ kataba Allah has decreed
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah has decreed
لَنَا lanā for us
هُوَ huwa He
مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ mawlānā (is) our Protector
وَعَلَى waʿalā And on
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ falyatawakkali [so] let the believers put (their) trust
ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ l-mu'minūna [so] let the believers put (their) trust

(Ayah51) ➊ {قُلْ لَّنْ يُّصِيْبَنَاۤ اِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللّٰهُ لَنَا:} This is a mention of the blessing of faith and conviction in Allah’s decree. It is true: {’’مَنْ عَلِمَ سِرَّ اللّٰهِ فِي الْقَدَرِ هَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَصَائِبُ ‘‘} “Whoever understands the secret of Allah’s decree and destiny, calamities become easy for him.” As Allah Almighty has said: “No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in a Book before We bring it into existence. Surely, that is easy for Allah, so that you may not grieve over what escapes you, nor exult over what He gives you.” [ الحدید : ۲۲، ۲۳ ]

{ هُوَ مَوْلٰىنَا … :} He alone is our Master, Helper, and Protector. We are pleased with our Master, and for the believers, it is necessary to rely only on Allah, not on the means and resources of the world, nor on any other being besides Him. The use of {’’ وَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ ‘‘} at the beginning creates the meaning of exclusivity, and in {’’ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ‘‘}, the meaning of “fa” is that if you want to remedy the discouragement caused by the attitude of these hypocrites, then the demand of the believers’ faith is that they should rely only on Allah and not care for anyone else besides Him.
