And whenever there comes down a Sûrah (chapter from the Qur’ân), they look at one another (saying): "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allâh has turned their hearts (from the light) because they are a people that understand not.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 127) ➊ {وَ اِذَا مَاۤ اُنْزِلَتْ سُوْرَةٌ …:} In this verse, Allah has depicted the scene when the hypocrites would be present in the gathering of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and whenever a surah or verses exposing their secrets or containing the command of jihad would be revealed, then they would look at each other with meanness and mischief, and seizing the opportunity, making sure no one was watching, they would slip away from the gathering. It was clear to them that these verses referred to them, because going out for jihad meant death for them, and sitting in that gathering was entirely a cause of humiliation for them, so instead of repenting, they preferred to leave. Allah said: «{ قَدْ يَعْلَمُ اللّٰهُ الَّذِيْنَ يَتَسَلَّلُوْنَ مِنْكُمْ لِوَاذًا [ النور : ۶۳ ] "Indeed, Allah knows those among you who slip away, taking shelter behind others."

{ صَرَفَ اللّٰهُ قُلُوْبَهُمْ:} "Allah has turned their hearts away" because they do not understand what is in their own welfare and benefit, or it is a supplication against them that they are deserving that it be said about them that Allah turn their hearts away.
