أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ﴿126﴾
See they not that they are put in trial once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine)? Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).
أَوَلَا awalā Do not

(Ayah 126) {اَوَ لَا يَرَوْنَ اَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُوْنَ … :} Most of the time, during war and jihad, the hypocrites would become known (but still they would persist in their hypocrisy). (Muwaddih) In the same way, every person faces some trial in the form of illness or fear, etc., once or twice every year, so that he may have the opportunity to reflect. It is said: «{ وَ لَنُذِيْقَنَّهُمْ مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ الْاَدْنٰى دُوْنَ الْعَذَابِ الْاَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُوْنَ [ السجدۃ : ۲۱ ] "And surely, We will make them taste a portion of the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return." The fortunate ones are granted the ability to repent and take admonition from this, but the hypocrite remains deprived. The first meaning is more appropriate at this place.
