Surah Al-A'laa (87) — Ayah 1

(Ayah 1) ➊ The meaning of {سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْاَعْلَى: ’’تَسْبِيْحٌ‘‘} is "to declare free from every evil." Several things are included in the command to purify the name of the Lord Most High. First, say {’’سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلٰی‘‘}. Thus, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite {’’ سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْاَعْلَى ‘‘}, he would say: [ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلٰي ] [ أبو داوٗد، الصلاۃ ، باب الدعاء في الصلاۃ : ۸۸۳، وصححہ الألباني ] "Glory is to my Lord, the Most High." In addition, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in order to act upon this command in prostration, would recite {’’سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلٰي‘‘} at least three times. [ دیکھیے نسائي، التطبیق، باب نوع آخر : ۱۱۳۴، صحیح] Secondly, consider your Lord free from every kind of deficiency, flaw, weakness, and any partner, and keep announcing this, so that the ears of the polytheists and people of false beliefs continue to hear this proclamation. Thirdly, always honor the name of your Lord; do not remember Him in such a manner, place, or words that are not befitting to His majesty, or that would be disrespectful, or have an aspect of mockery, or there is a risk of associating partners with Him. The safest way for this is to use only those names for Him which He Himself has used for Himself. Fourthly, do not use Allah's name for any creature, for example, do not call Abdul Rahman as Rahman. If a word is shared, do not use it for a creature in such a way as it should be used for the Creator.
➋ "Glorify the name of your Lord" or "Glorify your Lord" both have the same meaning, because "Lord" is also His name. The word "name" was added because you cannot reach the reality and essence of Allah Almighty; your access is only to His name, so keep glorifying Him. Some have said that when the glorification of the name is necessary, then His essence is even more deserving of glorification.
