Surah Al-Burooj (85) — Ayah 10

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ ﴿10﴾
Verily, those who put into trial the believing men and believing women (by torturing them and burning them), and then do not turn in repentance (to Allâh), then they will have the torment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the burning Fire.
إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
فَتَنُوا۟ fatanū persecuted
ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ l-mu'minīna the believing men
وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ wal-mu'mināti and the believing women
ثُمَّ thumma then
لَمْ lam not
يَتُوبُوا۟ yatūbū they repented
فَلَهُمْ falahum then for them
عَذَابُ ʿadhābu (is the) punishment
جَهَنَّمَ jahannama (of) Hell
وَلَهُمْ walahum and for them
عَذَابُ ʿadhābu (is the) punishment
ٱلْحَرِيقِ l-ḥarīqi (of) the Burning Fire

The meaning of (Ayah10){ اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ …: ’’فِتْنَةٌ ‘‘} is to put gold into fire in order to test the genuine from the counterfeit. Then this word also began to be used in the sense of burning, tormenting, punishing, and attempting to turn someone away from the truth. By {’’ اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ فَتَنُوْا ‘‘} is meant the Companions of the Ditch (Ashab al-Ukhdud) as well, who threw the believers into trenches of fire, and also all those oppressors among the disbelievers of Quraysh and those who came after them, who tried in various ways to turn the believers away from faith by inflicting different kinds of torment. {’’ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَ لَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَرِيْقِ ‘‘} In Hell there are many kinds of punishment, the most severe of which is burning, so this is mentioned specifically; in addition, for those who burned the believers, the punishment of burning is most fitting. {’’ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوْبُوْا ‘‘} (then did not repent) See the generosity of Allah: even for those who burned the believers, the punishment of Hell is only mentioned if they die without repenting, because repentance wipes out all previous sins. This also encourages repentance.
