وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ كَٱلَّذِينَ خَرَجُوا۟ مِن دِيَـٰرِهِم بَطَرًا وَرِئَآءَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٌ ﴿47﴾
And be not like those who come out of their homes boastfully and to be seen of men, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allâh; and Allâh is Muhîtun (encircling and thoroughly comprehending) all that they do.
وَلَا walā And (do) not
تَكُونُوا۟ takūnū be
كَٱلَّذِينَ ka-alladhīna like those who
خَرَجُوا۟ kharajū came forth
مِن min from
دِيَـٰرِهِم diyārihim their homes
بَطَرًۭا baṭaran boastfully
وَرِئَآءَ wariāa and showing off
ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi (to) the people
وَيَصُدُّونَ wayaṣuddūna and hinder (them)
عَن ʿan from
سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way
ٱللَّهِ ۚ l-lahi (of) Allah
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah
بِمَا bimā of what
يَعْمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna they do
مُحِيطٌۭ muḥīṭun (is) All-Encompassing

(Ayah 47) {وَ لَا تَكُوْنُوْا كَالَّذِيْنَ خَرَجُوْا مِنْ دِيَارِهِمْ …:} After commanding the Muslims to remain steadfast in battle and to remember Allah abundantly, now they are forbidden from adopting the ways of the disbelievers. (Ibn Kathir) By "them" are meant Abu Jahl and his companions, who set out with three objectives: {’’ بَطَرًا ‘‘} to prove their arrogance and pride, {’’ رِئَآءَ النَّاسِ ‘‘} to display their grandeur and bravery to the people, and {’’ يَصُدُّوْنَ عَنْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ ‘‘} to prevent people from the path of Allah, that is, from Islam, whereas the believer sets out solely to make Allah's religion prevail and to attain His pleasure. The result was that instead of displaying grandeur, reciting boastful poetry, and holding gatherings of wine drinking, they had to drink the cup of death, return with humiliation, disgrace, and painful calamities. It was as if these people had set out to confront their Lord, and none of their small or great deeds could escape the grasp of that All-Powerful and All-Subduer; what could they possibly present before Him? On the occasion of Khandaq, Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said beautifully:
{جَائَتْ سَخِيْنَةُ كَيْ تُغَالِبَ رَبَّهَا ¤ وَلَيُغْلَبَنَّ مُغَالِبُ الْغَلاَّبِ}
"Sakhinah, meaning Quraysh, came to confront their Lord, and whoever confronts that Mighty and Dominant One will surely be defeated in every way."
