وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًا ﴿7﴾
And verily, every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride.
وَإِنِّى wa-innī And indeed, I
كُلَّمَا kullamā every time
دَعَوْتُهُمْ daʿawtuhum I invited them
لِتَغْفِرَ litaghfira that You may forgive
لَهُمْ lahum them
جَعَلُوٓا۟ jaʿalū they put
أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ aṣābiʿahum their fingers
فِىٓ in
ءَاذَانِهِمْ ādhānihim their ears
وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ wa-is'taghshaw and covered themselves
ثِيَابَهُمْ thiyābahum (with) their garments
وَأَصَرُّوا۟ wa-aṣarrū and persisted
وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ wa-is'takbarū and were arrogant
ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭا is'tik'bāran (with) pride

(Ayah 7) ➊ { وَ اِنِّيْ كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ … :} In this verse, a small part is omitted, that is, whenever I invited them (to believe, so that as a result) You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered their faces with their garments, and persisted in their stance... That is, they had no justification to reject the invitation of Noah (peace be upon him), nor did they have the courage to face his arguments. On the other hand, they were not ready to abandon polytheism, nor were they willing to give up their pride. Accepting the words of Noah (peace be upon him) would have affected their leadership, greatness, and chieftaincy, so their effort was that neither should the words of Noah (peace be upon him) reach their ears, nor should their eyes fall upon him. In short, they tried in every way to avoid any confrontation with him, lest he start preaching again, so in any way possible, they would cover their faces and heads and leave from his presence.

{وَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا :} The arrogance of the people of Noah (peace be upon him) was that they refused to accept the truth. Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [ لاَ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِيْ قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِّنْ كِبْرٍ، قَالَ رَجُلٌ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَكُوْنَ ثَوْبُهُ حَسَنًا وَنَعْلُهُ حَسَنَةً، قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَمِيْلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْطُ النَّاسِ ] [ مسلم، الإیمان، باب تحریم الکبر وبیانہ : ۹۱ ] "Whoever has even an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise." A man said: "A person likes that his clothes are good and his shoes are good (so is this also arrogance)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(This is not arrogance) Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is to reject the truth and to look down upon people."
