فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ ﴿36﴾
So what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten to listen from you [O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), in order to belie you and to mock at you, and at Allâh’s Book (this Qur’ân)].

(Ayah 36 to 39) {فَمَالِ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا … : ’’ مُهْطِعِيْنَ ‘‘ ’’أَهْطَعَ يُهْطِعُ‘‘} is an active participle from (verbs), one who runs swiftly. {’’ عِزِيْنَ ‘‘} is the plural of {’’عِزَةٌ‘‘}, which was originally {’’عِزَوَةٌ‘‘} or {’’عِزَهَةٌ‘‘}, groups, parties. The disbelievers would form groups to mock the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), sometimes running towards him from the right, sometimes from the left; they would deny the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), reject the Hereafter, and mockingly say that even if, hypothetically, there is a Paradise, it is for them, because in this world too, they have received more blessings. Allah Almighty expressed amazement at their coming in this manner and said: Has each one of them begun to consider himself so high that he aspires to enter the blessed Paradise? Never! They themselves know what We created them from; does arrogance suit a human who was created from a despicable drop? For this subject, see Surah Al-Mursalat (20 to 23) and Surah At-Tariq (5 to 7).

Three points are intended from these verses: first, to restrain man from arrogance and remind him that you, being created from something as insignificant as semen, have become so great that you consider entry into Paradise your right, whereas you will only be worthy of Paradise by obeying the Messenger, against whom you are attacking in groups. Second, to refute the disbelievers’ hope that they will enter Paradise; as if it is being said: We created you from the same thing as others, so when everyone’s creation is the same, how did you become candidates for Paradise without deeds? The third point is to present proof of resurrection: when We created you from this insignificant fluid, then how is recreating you difficult? As He said: « اَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّنْ مَّنِيٍّ يُّمْنٰى» [ القیامۃ : ۳۷ ] “Was he not a drop of semen emitted?”
