Surah Al-A'raaf (7) — Ayah 86

وَلَا تَقْعُدُوا۟ بِكُلِّ صِرَٰطٍ تُوعِدُونَ وَتَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِهِۦ وَتَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا ۚ وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ إِذْ كُنتُمْ قَلِيلًا فَكَثَّرَكُمْ ۖ وَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ ﴿86﴾
"And sit not on every road, threatening, and hindering from the Path of Allâh those who believe in Him, and seeking to make it crooked. And remember when you were but few, and He multiplied you. And see what was the end of the Mufsidûn (mischief-makers, corrupters, liars).
وَلَا walā And (do) not
تَقْعُدُوا۟ taqʿudū sit
بِكُلِّ bikulli on every
صِرَٰطٍۢ ṣirāṭin path
تُوعِدُونَ tūʿidūna threatening
وَتَصُدُّونَ wataṣuddūna and hindering
عَن ʿan from
سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah
مَنْ man (those) who
ءَامَنَ āmana believe
بِهِۦ bihi in Him
وَتَبْغُونَهَا watabghūnahā and seeking (to make) it
عِوَجًۭا ۚ ʿiwajan crooked
وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ wa-udh'kurū And remember
إِذْ idh when
كُنتُمْ kuntum you were
قَلِيلًۭا qalīlan few
فَكَثَّرَكُمْ ۖ fakatharakum and He increased you
وَٱنظُرُوا۟ wa-unẓurū And see
كَيْفَ kayfa how
كَانَ kāna was
عَـٰقِبَةُ ʿāqibatu (the) end
ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ l-muf'sidīna (of) the corrupters

(Ayah 86){ وَ لَا تَقْعُدُوْا بِكُلِّ صِرَاطٍ ……:} These people set up checkpoints on the roads and forcibly collected taxes from people, sometimes intimidating and humiliating them, and taking away everything they had. If anyone seemed inclined to believe in Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him), they would try in every possible way to stop him, and by finding various faults and raising doubts about the commands of Islam, they would try to prove that this is not the right path but a wrong one. Just as even today, those so-called Muslim intellectuals, journalists, professors, and rulers who are overawed by the disbelievers, keep trying to prove the commands of Islam as barbaric. Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him) forbade them from these evils and reminded them of Allah’s favor, that He had multiplied their small population, and advised them to take a lesson from the evil end of the corrupters.
