He it is Who has made the earth subservient to you (i.e. easy for you to walk, to live and to do agriculture on it); so walk in the path thereof and eat of His provision. And to Him will be the Resurrection.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 15) ➊ {هُوَ الَّذِيْ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَرْضَ ذَلُوْلًا … : ’’ ذَلُوْلًا ‘‘} That which becomes subservient to you, does not rebel. Here, the earth is likened to that animal which is completely obedient to a human, whether he rides it or harnesses it to a plow. That is, you can walk upon it and use it for your needs. Allah Almighty has fixed mountains in the earth to protect it from being in a constant state of earthquake, so that you may live in peace. He did not make it as hard as iron, otherwise nothing would grow from it, nor could buildings be constructed, nor could canals or wells be dug, nor could the sustenance of humans and animals be arranged. Nor did He make it softer than necessary, otherwise everything would sink into it. See the foolishness of the polytheist nations: the very thing Allah made subservient to humans, they made it their deity under the name of Mother Earth. The literal meaning of {’’مَنَاكِبُ‘‘} is "shoulders." Just as a completely obedient animal allows itself to be ridden not only on its back but also on its shoulders, the earth is similarly subjugated for you; you may walk upon it wherever you wish.

{ وَ كُلُوْا مِنْ رِّزْقِهٖ … :} Eat from what He has provided, but not with complete freedom; rather, with the understanding that you are eating what He has given, and in the end you will have to appear before your Lord, who will take account of every single thing: how you obtained it and where you spent it.
