Surah At-Tahrim (66) — Ayah 3

وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِىُّ إِلَىٰ بَعْضِ أَزْوَٰجِهِۦ حَدِيثًا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتْ بِهِۦ وَأَظْهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَرَّفَ بَعْضَهُۥ وَأَعْرَضَ عَنۢ بَعْضٍ ۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِۦ قَالَتْ مَنْ أَنۢبَأَكَ هَـٰذَا ۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِىَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْخَبِيرُ ﴿3﴾
And (remember) when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives (Hafsah), then she told it (to another i.e. ‘Âishah). And Allâh made it known to him; he informed part thereof and left a part. Then when he told her (Hafsah) thereof, she said: "Who told you this?" He said: "The All-Knower, the All-Aware (Allâh) has told me."
وَإِذْ wa-idh And when
أَسَرَّ asarra confided
ٱلنَّبِىُّ l-nabiyu the Prophet
إِلَىٰ ilā to
بَعْضِ baʿḍi one
أَزْوَٰجِهِۦ azwājihi (of) his wives
حَدِيثًۭا ḥadīthan a statement
فَلَمَّا falammā and when
نَبَّأَتْ nabba-at she informed
بِهِۦ bihi about it
وَأَظْهَرَهُ wa-aẓharahu and made it apparent
ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah
عَلَيْهِ ʿalayhi to him
عَرَّفَ ʿarrafa he made known
بَعْضَهُۥ baʿḍahu a part of it
وَأَعْرَضَ wa-aʿraḍa and avoided
عَنۢ ʿan [of]
بَعْضٍۢ ۖ baʿḍin a part
فَلَمَّا falammā Then when
نَبَّأَهَا nabba-ahā he informed her
بِهِۦ bihi about it
قَالَتْ qālat she said
مَنْ man Who
أَنۢبَأَكَ anba-aka informed you
هَـٰذَا ۖ hādhā this
قَالَ qāla He said
نَبَّأَنِىَ nabba-aniya Has informed me
ٱلْعَلِيمُ l-ʿalīmu the All-Knower
ٱلْخَبِيرُ l-khabīru the All-Aware

(Ayah 3) ➊ { وَ اِذْ اَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ اِلٰى بَعْضِ اَزْوَاجِهٖ حَدِيْثًا :} By this wife is meant Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), as has been mentioned earlier in the incidents of honey and Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), that he had told her not to tell anyone about this matter. It is also possible that there was some other matter which Allah Almighty did not mention.
{فَلَمَّا نَبَّاَتْ بِهٖ وَ اَظْهَرَهُ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ :} Then when Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) told that matter, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had emphasized to keep secret, to Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), Allah Almighty informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this.
{ عَرَّفَ بَعْضَهٗ وَ اَعْرَضَ عَنْۢ بَعْضٍ :} So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned to Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) some part of it, that you have told this matter to someone else, and overlooked some part. What he mentioned to her and what he did not mention, Allah Almighty did not specify, so safety lies in leaving it ambiguous as it is.
➍ From this, the perfection of the noble character, forbearance, and generosity of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is evident, that when expressing displeasure, he did not mention every single thing to reproach or criticize, but mentioned some part and overlooked some part.
{قَالَتْ مَنْ اَنْۢبَاَكَ هٰذَا قَالَ نَبَّاَنِيَ الْعَلِيْمُ الْخَبِيْرُ:} Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) thought that perhaps Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had told him about this, so she asked, "Who told you about this?" He replied, "The One who is All-Knowing and All-Aware has informed me."
