Allâh sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Nûh (Noah) and the wife of Lût (Lot). They were under two of our righteous slaves, but they both betrayed them (their husbands by rejecting their doctrine). So they [Nûh (Noah) and Lût (Lot) عليهما السلام] availed them (their respective wives) not against Allâh and it was said: "Enter the Fire along with those who enter!"

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 10) ➊ { ضَرَبَ اللّٰهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوا امْرَاَتَ نُوْحٍ وَّ امْرَاَتَ لُوْطٍ …:} After the command to strive against the disbelievers and hypocrites, the evil of disbelief and the blessing of faith are described, that on the Day of Resurrection, no kind of kinship with a Muslim will benefit a disbeliever, even if the wife of a prophet is a disbeliever, that prophet will not be able to save her from entering Hell. Previously, in the Holy Qur’an, examples of blood relations have been mentioned in the form of the son of Noah (peace be upon him) and the father of Abraham (peace be upon him). Here, the wives of Noah (peace be upon him) and Lot (peace be upon him) are mentioned as examples of disbelieving people. Some people have said that this story was told to the pure wives, but this is wrong and baseless, because in this verse, disbelieving women are mentioned, whose husbands could not benefit them due to their disbelief and they were cast into the Fire. How can the Mothers of the Believers be compared to them, about whom the Holy Qur’an has testified to their faith, piety, and purity!? The truth is that the story of the pure wives has ended above, and the subject of this verse is related to {’’ يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا قُوْۤا اَنْفُسَكُمْ ‘‘}, because the benefit of believing relatives to their believing kin is established in the Holy Qur’an (Tur: 21) and in the hadiths of intercession.
➋ In the books of exegesis, the names of the wives of Noah and Lot (peace be upon them) have been mentioned differently, but none is established with an authentic chain.
{ فَخَانَتٰهُمَا :} Allah Almighty has not mentioned what that betrayal was, nor has it been mentioned in any authentic way. If it had been necessary, Allah Almighty would certainly have mentioned it; keeping it ambiguous seems to have the wisdom that a person should remain fearful of every kind of betrayal.
