Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

:} In this verse and the next verse, as examples of the transgressions of these hypocrites, some of their insolent statements have been mentioned, which express their intense hatred and deep malice towards Islam and the Muslims. It is as if it is being stated that this is their worst transgression because of which Allah does not guide them, and because of which even the seeking of forgiveness by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is of no benefit to them. Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: : ۴۹۰۳ ] “We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and during this journey, the people faced very harsh conditions. So Abdullah bin Ubayy said to his companions: ‘Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse from around him.’ And he said: ‘If we return to Madinah, the more honorable will surely expel the more humble from it.’ When I heard this, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and informed him of this. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent a message to Abdullah bin Ubayy and called him, and asked him about this matter. He swore a very strong oath that he had not done so. The people said: ‘Zayd has lied to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).’ This caused me great distress in my heart, until Allah revealed my confirmation in {’’ اِذَا جَآءَكَ الْمُنٰفِقُوْنَ ‘‘}. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called them so that he could seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away.” And (Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding Allah’s statement {’’ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ‘‘}: “They were very handsome men.”

➋ The purpose of bringing { وَ لِلّٰهِ خَزَآىِٕنُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضِ … : ’’ لِلّٰهِ ‘‘} first is to show that the owner of the treasures of the heavens and the earth is only Allah, and no one else. The hypocrites themselves were extremely greedy and miserly, so how could they spend? They were even preventing the sincere Muslims from spending on the Muhajirun, thinking that if they did not spend on them, they would die of hunger. Whereas the owner of all treasures is Allah, He can provide for them however He wills, but this is the ignorance of the hypocrites that they consider the sustenance of the Muhajirun to be in their own hands. That is why here the word {’’ لَا يَفْقَهُوْنَ ‘‘} has been used, that whoever thinks this way is ignorant.
