Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
It is equal to them whether you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) ask forgiveness or ask not forgiveness for them, Allâh will never forgive them. Verily, Allâh guides not the people who are the Fâsiqîn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 6) {سَوَآءٌعَلَيْهِمْاَسْتَغْفَرْتَلَهُمْاَمْلَمْتَسْتَغْفِرْلَهُمْ …: ’’ اَسْتَغْفَرْتَ ‘‘} is actually {’’ءَاِسْتَغْفَرْتَ ‘‘}; after the arrival of Hamzah al-Taswiyah, there was no longer a need for Hamzah al-Wasl, so it was omitted. In this, the Hamzah is not for interrogation, rather it is called Hamzah al-Taswiyah. (See Baqarah: 6) For the explanation of the verse, see the commentary of Surah Tawbah (80). The purpose of this is to end your (ﷺ) hope for their forgiveness, because despite all the mischief and disrespect of the hypocrites, due to your natural mercy and compassion, you (ﷺ) wished to supplicate for their forgiveness. Allah Almighty forbade you from supplicating for their forgiveness, because their transgression had exceeded all bounds.
