Surah Al-An'aam (6) — Ayah 44

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَٰبَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَآ أُوتُوٓا۟ أَخَذْنَـٰهُم بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُم مُّبْلِسُونَ ﴿44﴾
So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened for them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them (in punishment), and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.
فَلَمَّا falammā So when
نَسُوا۟ nasū they forgot
مَا what
ذُكِّرُوا۟ dhukkirū they were reminded
بِهِۦ bihi of [it]
فَتَحْنَا fataḥnā We opened
عَلَيْهِمْ ʿalayhim on them
أَبْوَٰبَ abwāba gates
كُلِّ kulli (of) every
شَىْءٍ shayin thing
حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā until
إِذَا idhā when
فَرِحُوا۟ fariḥū they rejoiced
بِمَآ bimā in what
أُوتُوٓا۟ ūtū they were given
أَخَذْنَـٰهُم akhadhnāhum We seized them
بَغْتَةًۭ baghtatan suddenly
فَإِذَا fa-idhā and then
هُم hum they
مُّبْلِسُونَ mub'lisūna (were) dumbfounded

(Ayah 44) ➊ { فَلَمَّا نَسُوْا مَا ذُكِّرُوْا بِهٖ …:} When they completely forgot Allah and His commands, Allah extended their rope for them to establish proof against them, and opened for them the doors of every kind of blessing. Then, when they became fully engrossed in luxury and comfort, Allah seized them suddenly, that is, a sudden punishment came upon them so that they forgot all their luxury and comfort, and they had no hope of escape, and in that very state of despair and hopelessness, they were destroyed and ruined. A wise person should, when hardship and difficulty come, consider it a warning from Allah and repent from evil deeds, otherwise heedlessness will increase and suddenly such a severe seizure will come that there will not even be an opportunity to repent. {’’ مُّبْلِسُوْنَ ‘‘} This is the plural of {’’ مُبْلِسٌ‘‘}, meaning one whose hope is lost.
{فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ اَبْوَابَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ:} From this verse it is understood that if, despite disbelief, polytheism, and disobedience to Allah, any nation is extremely developed and prosperous in terms of worldly wealth, it should not be thought that Allah is pleased with them; rather, this is istidraj and is extremely dangerous for them.
