The Cattle · Meccan · Juz 7 · Page 130

Those to whom We have given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) recognize him (i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم as a Messenger of Allâh, and they also know that there is no Ilâh (God) but Allâh and Islâm is Allâh’s Religion), as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost (destroyed) themselves will not believe. (Tafsir At-Tabarî).
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those (to) whom
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ ātaynāhumu We have given them
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ l-kitāba the Book
يَعْرِفُونَهُۥ yaʿrifūnahu they recognize him
كَمَا kamā as
يَعْرِفُونَ yaʿrifūna they recognize
أَبْنَآءَهُمُ ۘ abnāahumu their sons
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those who
خَسِرُوٓا۟ khasirū lost
أَنفُسَهُمْ anfusahum themselves
فَهُمْ fahum then they
لَا (do) not
يُؤْمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 20) ➊ {اَلَّذِيْنَ اٰتَيْنٰهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ يَعْرِفُوْنَهٗ …:} That is, the Jews and Christians have no doubt about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being a true Messenger, because mention of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is present in their own books. See Surah Al-Baqarah (146), Surah Al-A'raf (157), and Surah As-Saff (6).
➋ The disbelievers of Makkah asked the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so they denied his prophethood and said that there is no mention of him in the Torah and the Gospel. Upon this, the disbelievers asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that the People of the Book are denying your prophethood, so who bears witness to your prophethood? The answer to this was given in the previous verse, and in this verse it is stated that the People of the Book are lying when they say that there is no mention of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Torah and the Gospel. The reality is that these people know with full certainty that the prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is true, but out of stubbornness and obstinacy they deny it and are putting themselves at a loss. There is no hope of faith from such people, but those whose hearts are sincere will surely believe.
