Translation by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan & Dr. Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali
Lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: "The Book was sent down only to two sects before us (the Jews and the Christians), and for our part, we were in fact unaware of what they studied."

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.
(Ayah 156) {اَنْتَقُوْلُوْۤااِنَّمَاۤاُنْزِلَ ……:} So that you may not say that no book came to us; the book was sent only to the two groups before us, the Jews and the Christians, and it was only for them, and they did not even invite us so that we could have learned from them and believed; rather, they kept it restricted to the Children of Israel, and we too, considering it exclusive to them and due to some of our own heedlessness, remained unaware of reading it. Otherwise, not knowing the language is not a valid excuse, because when it becomes known that Allah’s command has come, a person can understand it from someone else.
