The Cattle · Meccan · Juz 8 · Page 143

Is he who was dead (without Faith by ignorance and disbelief) and We gave him life (by knowledge and Faith) and set for him a light (of Belief) whereby he can walk amongst men - like him who is in the darkness (of disbelief, polytheism and hypocrisy) from which he can never come out? Thus it is made fair-seeming to the disbelievers that which they used to do.
أَوَمَن awaman Is (one) who
كَانَ kāna was
مَيْتًۭا maytan dead
فَأَحْيَيْنَـٰهُ fa-aḥyaynāhu and We gave him life
وَجَعَلْنَا wajaʿalnā and We made
لَهُۥ lahu for him
نُورًۭا nūran light
يَمْشِى yamshī he walks
بِهِۦ bihi whereby
فِى among
ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi the people
كَمَن kaman like (one) who
مَّثَلُهُۥ mathaluhu [similar to him]
فِى (is) in
ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ l-ẓulumāti the darknesses
لَيْسَ laysa not
بِخَارِجٍۢ bikhārijin he comes out
مِّنْهَا ۚ min'hā of it
كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus
زُيِّنَ zuyyina is made fair-seeming
لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ lil'kāfirīna to the disbelievers
مَا what
كَانُوا۟ kānū they were
يَعْمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna doing

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 122) ➊ { اَوَ مَنْ كَانَ مَيْتًا فَاَحْيَيْنٰهُ …… : } That is, he was a disbeliever and was made a Muslim. (Shawkani) Above, the mention was of the dead among animals; here, the same example is given for the disbelievers, meaning that when they were disbelievers, due to ignorance and disbelief and polytheism, they were all dead. Then, whoever received faith became alive and found light and the path of guidance, and on his face, everyone sees the light of faith, and whoever did not receive faith remained in darkness. (Muwaddih) See the subject of the living and dead among Muslims and disbelievers in Surah Al-Baqarah (257), Surah Hud (24), and Surah Fatir (19 to 22).
{كَذٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِلْكٰفِرِيْنَ مَا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ:} That is, Satan, through his whispers, presents the deeds of these disbelievers as beautiful in their eyes.
