All praises and thanks be to Allâh, Who (Alone) created the heavens and the earth, and originated the darkness and the light; yet those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord.

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim — Hafiz Abdus Salam Bin Muhammad Bhutvi
Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). This Surah contains proofs of the fundamental beliefs of Islam such as Tawheed and the Hereafter, and arguments refuting the polytheists and people of innovation. Its virtue has already been mentioned along with Surah Al-Baqarah. (Ayah 1) ➊ {اَلْحَمْدُلِلّٰهِ:} In this verse, the proof is given that Allah alone possesses all perfections and is the only deity, and amazement is expressed at the polytheists’ shirk. ➋ {خَلَقَالسَّمٰوٰتِوَالْاَرْضَ … :} Here, Allah has mentioned two types of things: one is the substances of the earth and the heavens, meaning those that have their own separate existence, and the other is darkness and light, which are accidents, meaning they exist through other things. The meaning is that there is no substance or accident in the universe that Allah has not created. By darkness and light, what is meant is night and day, or the light of faith and the darkness of disbelief. (Qurtubi) The wisdom in mentioning {’’ النُّوْرَ ‘‘} in the singular and {’’الظُّلُمٰتِ ‘‘} in the plural seems to be that the light of faith is only one, while the misguidances of disbelief are countless. The straight path is one, and the wrong paths are innumerable. ➌ {ثُمَّالَّذِيْنَكَفَرُوْابِرَبِّهِمْيَعْدِلُوْنَ:} That is, when the Creator and Owner of everything is only Allah, and these polytheists also accept Him as their Lord (the Sustainer), then it was obligatory upon them to worship Him alone. Yet, they still consider others equal to Him, prostrate before them, offer vows in their names, make pledges, and seek help from them in difficulties. How irrational it is that Allah creates, He provides sustenance, yet others are asked, and they are considered equal to their Lord. See Surah Luqman (10, 11) and Surah Al-Ankabut (61 to 63).
