سُوْرَةُ الْمُجَادَلَةِ
Surah Al-Mujaadila (58) — Ayah 14
۞ أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا۟ قَوْمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَا مِنْهُمْ وَيَحْلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلْكَذِبِ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿14﴾

Have you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) not seen those (hypocrites) who take as friends a people upon whom is the Wrath of Allâh (i.e. Jews)? They are neither of you (Muslims) nor of them (Jews), and they swear to a lie while they know.

(Ayah 14) ➊ { اَلَمْ تَرَ اِلَى الَّذِيْنَ تَوَلَّوْا قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِمْ:} In this verse, while mentioning three characteristics of the hypocrites, amazement is expressed at their condition. The first characteristic among them is that despite their claim to faith, their friendship is with those who are the worst enemies of the believers and upon whom is Allah’s wrath. Although all disbelievers are under Allah’s wrath and the hypocrites befriended all disbelievers, but {’’مَغْضُوْبٌ عَلَيْهِمْ‘‘} is specifically the title of the Jews, as has been mentioned in the exegesis of {’’ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوْبِ عَلَيْهِمْ ‘‘}. See also Surah Al-Baqarah (61, 90), Aal-e-Imran (112), Al-A’raf (152), Al-Ma’idah (60), and Surah Al-Mumtahanah (13). Whereas Allah Almighty has explicitly forbidden the believers from befriending the Jews, Christians, and disbelievers. ➋ { مَا هُمْ مِّنْكُمْ وَ لَا مِنْهُمْ:} This is the second characteristic of the hypocrites: that despite outwardly being Muslims, in reality, they are not from among you, because if they were true believers, they would never befriend the disbelievers. (See Al-Ma’idah: 81) And similarly, they are not from among the Jews either, because they do not consider them to be upon the truth; their friendship is merely a friendship of self-interest, so that if any misfortune befalls the Muslims, their friendship will be of use. See the exegesis of Surah An-Nisa (143, 142).
➌ { وَ يَحْلِفُوْنَ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ وَ هُمْ يَعْلَمُوْنَ:} That is, even knowing that they are lying, they lie and even swear oaths upon it. This lie refers firstly to their claim of being believers. (See Al-Munafiqun: 1; At-Tawbah: 56) Then, at various times, when they were confronted about any statement or action against Allah, His Messenger, or the Muslims, they would lie and say, “We did not say this, nor did we do this,” and would swear oaths upon it. (See At-Tawbah: 62, 74, 96, 95; Al-Munafiqun: 6, 7) Many such incidents are mentioned in the books of Seerah.
