On the Day when the hypocrites - men and women - will say to the believers: "Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!" It will be said: "Go back to your rear! Then seek a light!" So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment."

Tafsir al-Quran al-Karim is a 4-volume Quran commentary by Hafiz Abdus Salam bin Muhammad Bhutvi, a renowned Salafi (Ahl al-Hadith) scholar and Sheikh ul-Hadith from Pakistan. Based on over 45 years of teaching and research, this tafsir follows the methodology of Tafsir bil-Ma'thur — interpreting the Quran through authentic Hadith, statements of the Companions, and the understanding of the early generations (Salaf). It is distinguished by its complete avoidance of Israeliyyat (Judeo-Christian narratives) and unverified reports. The tafsir is originally written in Urdu, translated to English by tohed.com.

(Ayah 13) ➊ { يَوْمَ يَقُوْلُ الْمُنٰفِقُوْنَ وَ الْمُنٰفِقٰتُ … :} Just as the hypocrites lived among the Muslims in this world, there too in the beginning they will be with the believers, but when the believers proceed towards Paradise in the light of their faith, then the hypocrite men and women will say to them, “We have no light, do not leave us behind in the darkness and go so quickly, rather wait a little and give us a chance so that we may also walk towards Paradise in your light.”

{قِيْلَ ارْجِعُوْا وَرَآءَكُمْ فَالْتَمِسُوْا نُوْرًا:} This can have two meanings: one is that it will be said to them, “Go back to the plain of resurrection where the decision to send to Paradise or Hell was made and where the light was obtained, and seek light there.” The second meaning is that this is the light of faith and deeds which cannot be obtained here; the place to obtain it is the world, so go there and bring this light from there.

{ فَضُرِبَ بَيْنَهُمْ بِسُوْرٍ لَّهٗ بَابٌ …:} While the believers and hypocrites are conversing, a great wall will be erected between them ({بِسُوْرٍ} in which the tanween is for magnification), so that even the light of the believers, which was visible from afar, will no longer be seen by them. On the inner side of this wall will be mercy, and on the outer side, where the hypocrites are, will be punishment. In this wall there will be a great door, through which the believers will enter to the inner side, then the door will be closed and the hypocrites will remain outside in punishment.
