سُوْرَةُ الرَّحْمٰنِ
Surah Ar-Rahmaan (55) — Ayah 9
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلْوَزْنَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا۟ ٱلْمِيزَانَ ﴿9﴾

And observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient.

(Ayah 9) ➊ {وَ اَقِيْمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ … : ’’ اَلْقِسْطُ‘‘} Justice, fairness. In these verses, the word {’’ الْمِيْزَانَ ‘‘} appears three times: the first is in the sense of an instrument (scale), the second as a verbal noun (weighing), and the third as a passive participle (meaning {مَوْزُوْنٌ}). (Ibn ‘Adil, al-Lubab) This emphasizes justice in weighing, measuring, and other standards. Allah Almighty has declared that one of the major reasons for the punishment upon the people of Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him) was their cheating in weights and measures, and a chapter of the Noble Qur’an is named “Mutaffifin,” in which there is a warning of “woe” for those who cheat in these matters.
➋ Many commentators have said that in {’’ وَ وَضَعَ الْمِيْزَانَ ‘‘}, by {’’ وَ اَقِيْمُوا الْوَزْنَ ‘‘} is meant justice, of which one branch is justice in weighing and measuring. Therefore, in {’’ وَ وَضَعَ الْمِيْزَانَ ‘‘} general justice is mentioned, and due to the importance of weighing and measuring, in {’’ اَقِيْمُوا الْوَزْنَ ‘‘} (keep the balance straight), the specific form of justice in weighing is mentioned separately.
