Surah Ar-Rahmaan (55) — Ayah 11
فِيهَا فَـٰكِهَةٌ وَٱلنَّخْلُ ذَاتُ ٱلْأَكْمَامِ ﴿11﴾

(Ayah 11){ فِيْهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّ النَّخْلُ ذَاتُ الْاَكْمَامِ: ’’ فَاكِهَةٌ ‘‘} These are the names of those fruits and things which are eaten not as food but for pleasure and enjoyment. This is derived from {’’فَكِهَ يَفْكَهُ‘‘} ({فَرِحَ يَفْرَحُ}), which means to spend pleasant time with conversation and laughter, etc. The tanween on {’’ فَاكِهَةٌ ‘‘} is for expressing abundance and greatness. {’’ النَّخْلُ ‘‘} are date palm trees; this is a generic noun, and if referring to a single tree, it is called {’’نَخْلَةٌ‘‘}. {’’ الْاَكْمَامِ ‘‘ ’’كِمٌّ‘‘} (with kasrah on the letter kaf) is the plural, the sheath above the cluster of dates. This sheath is not eaten, so what is meant is the description of the beauty of the clusters. The way Allah Almighty has packed the fruits on the trees and even after they are taken down from the trees, each one is, in its own place, an example of Allah Almighty’s great craftsmanship.
